Abstract:
Grounded in the “point-axis” spatial development theory and using the research methods of participant observation and semi-structured interviews, a theoretical framework of the “point-axis” of trails facilitating the two-way interaction of urban and rural resources is established. Subsequently, based on the successful experience from Trails in Zhejiang Province, the functional orientation and completion pathways of trails are sorted out. On this basis, a practical action model for the governance of national trails in China is proposed. The findings of this study are as follows: 1) Theoretically, the “point-axis” spacial structure of trails undergoes a four-stage core structure development process. Rural areas become the intersection center of the trail axis, and under the gradual diffusion effect, the respective advantageous resources of urban and rural areas interact and integrate in a bidirectional manner. 2) As to practical approaches, trails have the functions of protecting the ecological environment, promoting mass fitness activities, and helping rural revitalization. Throughout the process of trails system establishment, a top-level design should be followed in the first place, utilizing existing quasi-trail resources to avoid opening up new trails, focusing on digital empowerment and road network connectivity. The thus established action model of national trails governance practice is useful for guiding trail developers and stakeholders in formulating multi-stage strategies.
