Abstract: At present, a unanimously accepted standard for the selection of lottery events in the international sports betting lottery sector has not yet been established. A standard of China of event selection for sports betting lottery is established through methods including literature research, expert interviews, case studies, and mathematical statistics. The standard, consisting of 21 criteria in three facets: event, operation, and environment, aimed to further enhance the professional operation level of sports betting lottery, clarify and address relevant issues that have persisted for a long time, and thus better exert its public welfare value and contribute to the development of sports. In comparison with typical international markets, the operation and management of China’s sports betting lottery are more rigorous and prudent. Hence, within the range of events that fulfill the prerequisite conditions, further selection should be implemented through a scientific assessment mechanism. Under the current regulatory environment, when it comes to event selection, the operator of China's sports betting lottery should attach greater importance to the social credibility and influence of the events, the events’ capacity to generate economic yields, and the characteristics of the events per se.
