Abstract: The development of a sports events system constitutes both a strategic fulcrum for advancing comprehensive sports governance and a pioneering initiative propelling the fulfillment of China’s national sports power blueprint. This study delves into the fundamental attributes of the sports event system with Chinese characteristics, analyzes the underlying drivers for its reconstruction, and proposes practical strategies from a methodological perspective, with the aim of providing theoretical insights and practical guidance for promoting the development and improvement of China’s sports event system. The study posits that the Chinese-characteristic sports event system should be defined as a framework deeply rooted in Chinese cultural heritage, aligned with China’s national realities, reflective of its people’s will, and responsive to both domestic development imperatives and evolving global trends. The system’s reconstruction constitutes both a strategic imperative for national policy implementation and an essential response to public welfare demands, requiring adherence to core principles: the integration of tradition preservation with institutional innovation, coordination between top-down planning and grassroots creativity, synergy between state strategies and societal needs, equilibrium between market dynamism and regulatory governance, and harmonization of Chinese distinctiveness with international best practices. To operationalize these principles, the reconstruction should focus on aligning goals with national strategies, building a hierarchical and tiered competition system through tailored policies, transforming governance from administrative dominance to a collaborative model involving government, market, and society, establishing resource allocation mechanisms and diversified financing systems that synergize capable government and efficient markets, and comprehensively strengthening the sports event support system with Chinese characteristics.
