Abstract: Against the practical goal of constructing an autonomous knowledge system of Chinese sports historiography, the study explores the dynamic pedigree of Chinese sports history knowledge since modern times, focusing on core issues including the structural evolution, causal tracing, and methodology of sports history knowledge. It is found that the knowledge of sports history in China has undergone an evolutionary process from a “fact-seeking description-oriented paradigm” to a “solution-seeking interpretation-oriented paradigm”. The “from-fact-to-interpretation” transition is propelled by the screening effect, snowball effect, zooming effect, and catalytic effect that promote the structural evolution of sports history knowledge. Drawing on the experience of existing knowledge history, the study puts forward four constructive proposals: refining empirical techniques and strengthening theoretical awareness; learning from other disciplines and adhering to own discipline; consolidating foundational historiography and activating applied historiography; reflecting on the domestic academic tradition and facing up to new foreign knowledge. It summarizes the methodological insights of knowledge accumulation, knowledge production, knowledge practice and knowledge evaluation in layers, aiming to facilitate the construction of an autonomous knowledge system of Chinese sports historiography and call for sports history knowledge products that conform to historiographical norms and have autonomous consciousness.
