Abstract: Sports books published in modern China have played an important role in the course of modernization and localization.Concerning articles of sports books in modern China are rare except several bibliographic books.In order to understand the development and variation of sports books published in modern China, finding out important resources of benefiting sports books and academic development, by methods of literature review, logic and statistics, the author mainly bases on the variation of quantity and characteristics of content, as well as the references of authors and sports practices, and gives the following five stages, namely, the pregnant (before 1910s) , the embryo (1910s) , the developing (1920s) , the declining (1930s) and the stable stage (1940s) .Social demand and national system are important factors of the development of sports books in modern China.By the scientific idea of sport academic researches, this paper defines and forms the functions of modern sport and its academic thoughts, cultivates and builds the academic atmosphere and tradition with the Chinese manner.It is an important way to realize the goal of sports power and the innovation of sports culture.
