Sports Governance in the Early Byzantine Empire

Abstract: The period of early Byzantine Empire starts from the unification of Constantinus I Magnus in 324 AD and ends as Justinianus passes away in 565 AD.It is a transfer time from the classical to middle ages,in which sports governance has to react to the new demand as the new time comes. The observation from sources shows that sports legislations in the period have the goal of encouraging sports activities, ensuring game expenditure, decreasing unnecessary waste and objecting corruption. The legislations also give different judgment as for the racehorsing, wild beast and gladiator.Under the influence of Christianity, sports activities related to paganism no longer exist, and sports law and game rituals are modified by the new religion. However, the modification is not fundamental. The transfer of the overall imperial political conditions causes the politicization of circus factions and supporters violence. It is a time that connects between the proceeding and the following in sports history. The experience in the early Byzantine Empire proves that sports governance plays a vital role in nation governance, and rule of law is a main road in promoting the positive role of sports governance.
