Abstract:
The outstanding performance of young Japanese table tennis players in the international competitions during the recent years has rekindled public hope and expectation for the future of Japanese table tennis. The unique strategy of the Japanese“Generation Project”has become the focus of young athlete cultivation. Through in-depth interviews and document analysis, this paper investigates youth table tennis clubs and elite schools in Japan by explaining the processes and characteristics of the strategic reform called the“Generation Project”. The project's background, contents, measures, and results are introduced and discussed. The results show that: 1) the“Generation Project”was implemented to revitalize competitive sports driven by national pride, as well as maximize the great benefits of the Olympic Games and the hosting of said games; 2) the“Generation Project”focuses on junior athlete training strategy, league system construction, the guarantee of a national sport promotion system, the construction of a systematic coaching body, and personalized training options; 3) the specific measures of“Generation Project”include paying attention to the progressive cultivation of“aging”, the professional construction of campus table tennis, the construction of highlevel reserve talent base, the domestication of high-level Chinese coaches, the“younger age”training system of competitive ability enhancement and the cultivation of comprehensive competitive thinking ability, etc.; 4) this project has achieved remarkable results so far, Japan has succeeded in perfecting its table tennis management system and also in securing sufficient funding for all its programs. Japan's table tennis industry has begun to develop in an all-round way, and outstanding table tennis talents have begun to emerge, and they have beome able to compete with China in the international table tennis arena.
