    Study on the Feasibility of Respiratory Rate Break Point Assessed Anaerobic Threshold

    • The respiratory rate (RR) can be tested as easy as the heart rate by the appearance of smart fabric which can calculate RR by measuring chest expansion and contraction with tension sensors built-in.If it is possible for RR to determine AT, it would be a new, noninvasive, and very simple method.The purpose of this study is to test correlation of the respiratory rate's breakpoint with ILAT (Individual Lactate threshold) , VAT (Ventilatory threshold) to determine whether or not respiratory rate could used for AT.Method:14male subjects as basketball players in university were recruited for this study.Incremental exercise stress test to determine the point of LAT, VAT, and in this exercise, we test the respiratory rate synchronously.After the test, we find out the breakpoint of respiratory rate and compare it with LAT, VAT.Result:The correlation between RR which tested that by tension sensors and RR which test by metabolic gas analyzer is very high (r=0.968, P=0.000) .It implies that RR test by tension sensors is valid and reliable.All subjects' RR-time curve appeared obvious breakpoint.There is no significant difference among RRBP, ILAT and VAT as power, VO2, %VO2max, time for parameters, respectively.There were highly significant correlation between RRBP and ILAT as power, VO2, %VO2max, time for parameters.And these are:r=0.926 (P=0.000) , r=0.889 (P=0.000) 、r=0.851 (P=0.000) , r=0.869 (P=0.000) .The correlations between RRBP and VAT are highly too as power, VO2, %VO2max, time for parameters, these are r=0.919 (P=0.000) , r=0.899 (P=0.000) , r=0.889 (P=0.000) , r=0.875 (P=0.000) .The detection rate of heart rate deflection point (HRDP) in the subjects was 57.1%.Conclusion:In an incremental exercise stress test, RRBP always appears with high stability and repeatability.The results of RR test by tension sensors are valid and reliable.RRBP is an efficiency index for determining AT.RRBP determining AT is a new, noninvasive and very easy method.HRDP is not a good and reliable way for determined AT.
