Study on Rules of Use and Gamesmanship in Sport

    • Rules of use in sport is a common phenomenon. The relationship between rules of use and gamesmanship is analyzed in this paper by studying the recent typical examples in sport and the characteristics of gamesmanship. The conclusions are as follows:gamesmanship is to gain competitive advantage, even victory by using rules instrumentally, and rules of use is one form of gamesmanship.Gamesmanship is different from sportsmanship, the former pays more attention to result, and pursues maximized benefits by using rules. On the contrary, sportsmanship emphasizes more on the performance, and demands players abide by not only the written rules but also rules spirit.Gamesmanship is rule-based, so it's not equal with cheating and can't be punished by terms of rules. The common ways of sport rules revision can't prevent rules use and strong gamesmanship, which should be decreased or prevented by improving athletes' practical wisdom, making some codes and principles for guiding competition.
