Systematic Characteristics of GB Sport Renaissance and Its Implications for Olympic Strategy in China

    • British sport succeeded in reviving in high performance sports with the 2nd ranking of gold medal in Rio Olympic Games, after touching the historical low ebb in Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996. The revival of British sport is attributed to a deep analysis on the former system, as well as a systematic sport policy, including establishing UK Sport to focus solely on high performance sport, introducing the national lottery to invest on high performance sports, conducting the World Class Programme for athletes and coaches, strengthening the national governing bodies, launching the English Institute of Sport to provide high-level scientific service, applying the evidence-based talent identification and development model to rapidly promote the athletes, integrating the sources from different organizations to provide all-round supporting for athletes. The renaissance of British sport has multiple implications to China, including optimizing the administrative system and sport policy, strengthening scientific research to support high performance sports, emphasizing the development of young athletes and improving the evidence-based science during the talent identification, establishing the system of coach education and expanding the coach sources.
