Why Do Athletes Choke Under Pressure——The Sound of Process Theory

    • there is a psychological phenomenon called choking under pressure of athletes which attracts much attention in sports. It is defined as deterioration in the execution of habitual process of performance under pressure. Studies on Choking started in early 1980s,which used self-monitoring theory or distraction theory to explain its mechanism. Because of the controversy over the two hypotheses,Wang Jin put forward a more comprehensive theoretical explanation and called it the process theory. However, after the process theory was put forward, there was no systematic verification and universal acceptance. Moreover, how to identify Choking was unclear. Based on the evidence from the process theory, the article answers the above questions, and discusses Choking in different level or sports, and the neural basis of Choking. According to the process theory, this paper discusses its occurrence from the angle of system analysis, and finally proposes the process entropy to identify the occurrence of Choking.
