Abstract
The reuse of industrial space is an important issue in the upgrading of industrial structure, and also an important factor in urban planning. The main purpose of this study is to promote the reuse of wasted industrial space by combining it with sports development. By using the methods of literature review, expert interview, field investigation, and case study, this study analyzes the practical modes of reuse of wasted industrial space driven by sports development and their advantages, characteristics, and difficulties in China, and put forward some suggestions. Based on the investigation, the reuse patterns of wasted industrial space driven by sports development in China are reflected in six modes: the mode of transforming old industrial areas into sports industrial parks, the mode of constructing sports space in waterfront industrial zone, the mode of transforming industrial building group into a fitness center, the mode of transforming large-scale industrial buildings into urban sports complex, the mode of transforming small industrial buildings into sports venues and the mode of developing sports activities based on characteristic industrial facilities. The practices of the modes present three advantages as appropriate structure and function matching, large space for industrial growth, and diversified social value. They also present four characteristics as follows. Government's overall planning and policy supporting are crucial, the resources of large-scale state-owned enterprises are dominant, local land policies show different inclinations, and the development and operation modes are diversified. In addition, it is faced with the difficulties of insufficient planning guidance, lack of coordination mechanism, insufficient policy support, low degree of industrial integration, and weak theoretical research. Finally, this study puts forward the following suggestions from five aspects. The first is to strengthen planning and explore the long-term function of sports in urban renewal and industrial transformation; the second is to promote coordinated development and guide large industrial state-owned enterprises to develop sports industry; the third is to optimize policy support and stimulate long-term investment of social capital; the fourth is to enrich space utilization mode and promote material and cultural renewal as a whole; the fifth is to strengthen research on sports spatial planning, and explore the development and utilization of new sports space.
